Research Center 

In order to build a world-class base of scientific research innovation and a scientific exchange platform and develop SUSTech into an international high level research university, our leaders are planning to build several interdisciplinary (or inter-category) integration research centers and interdisciplinary science research centers combining subject and major setup and centering on the leading professors.

The SUSTech Research Center is aimed at the new interdisciplinary disciplines of great national demand. Equipped with first-class innovation talents and world-class research and development equipment, the research centers will conduct cutting-edge interdisciplinary studies to make the research centers platforms for talents cultivation, knowledge and technological innovation in new interdisciplinary fields. The research centers will be established with several featured laboratories to provide platforms of innovation and entrepreneurship for senior undergraduates and graduates. In addition, during research and collision of different ideas new disciplines may emerge and will develop new requirements. The research center should present that the researched subjects are edge leading and interdisciplinary. The research center would strive for sufficient scientific research funds and project support with the motivation to achieve influential scientific outcome and talents in interdiscipline. The research centers would do every effort to be the pioneer and leader in relevant fields in Asia, the center of high-level innovation talents in order to drive SUSTech to become one of the international high-level research universities.

Technology leaders and technical experts in research centers are introduced from top Chinese and foreign famous colleges and universities. The research teams consist of teachers in the relevant departments. The teacher members in research teams should also bear teaching duties. In addition, the centers could provide technical support and service for relevant enterprises by intimate cooperation with domestic relevant enterprises to realize an industry-university-research cooperation and build a first-class pubic teaching platform and research and development technology platform. The establishment of the centers would also play an important role in high-technology industry development in the Pearl River Delta of Southern China (as well as with the Hong Kong and Macao regions).

According to the subject planning of the university, over 20 interdisciplinary research centers (see table 1) will be established in incremental stages. At present, three research centers are under construction: The Material Property Manipulation and Applied Research Center, the Science on Micro and Nanoscale Project Research Center and Life Science Research Center. The other centers are under consideration and preparation.


I. Material Property Manipulation and Applied Research Center

This center shall conduct atomic scale observation and analysis of the microstructure of materials using modern instruments and technologies. It shall also provide equipment and technology support for scientific research in first-class disciplines, such as physics, chemistry, optical engineering, materials science and engineering and electronic science and engineering. The research fields mainly include: 
1) material’s physical characterization and research;
2) organic electronic materials and devices;
3) molecule optical function materials;
4) function soft material nanometer materials;
5) nanomechanics and materials;
6) multiple level adulterated semiconductor material based on energy-band engineering;
7) advanced thin film functional materials.

The construction of the center started in June 2011 and obtained financial support for equipment from the Shenzhen Development and Reform Committee. According to the construction plan, the center would consist of five laboratories, a material structure and a component study laboratory, an electricity and magnetism surveying laboratory, an optical measurement laboratory, a thermomechanical analysis laboratory and a nuclear magnetic resonance laboratory.

The center would be equipped with 50 sets of advanced equipments, mainly including scanning electron microscope (SEM), atomic force microscope (AFM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), powder x-ray diffractometer, high resolution x-ray diffractometer, X- spectrograph, physical property measurement system, multifunction measuring table, semiconductor tester, electrochemical workstation, micro-raman spectroscopy system, electron spin resonance spectrometer, solar energy simulator, physical absorption/ chemisorption analyzer, differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), microscale isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC), thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA), massspectrum system, chromatograph system, laser dynamic light scatter (DLS), rheometer, circle two chromatographic instrument, microwave chemical reactor, super conducting NMR spectrometer (NMR) and magneto-optic superconducting magnet system.


II. Science on Micro and Nanoscale and Project Research Center.

The center could provide equipment and technology support for scientific research in first-class disciplines, such as physics, chemistry, optical engineering, materials science and engineering and electronic science and engineering. The research fields mainly include:
1) physics and functions of surface and microscale;
2) green micro-nano electron device;
3) molecular device;
4) microelectronics;
5) wireless signal processing and system optimization;
6) new photoelectronic technique and display technique;
7) photon capture engineering on micro-and nanoscale;
8) biosensor;
9) nanometer materials.

The research center is positioned to become the pioneer and leader in the field of micro-and nanoscale in Asia and would do every effort to make SUSTech become one of the first-class research universities to cultivate innovation talents.

The center starts construction in June 2011 and obtains equipment purchasing financial support from Shenzhen Development and Reform Committee in December 2012. According to the construction planning, the center would consist of four laboratories, film preparation laboratory, photoetching laboratory, adulteration deposition and growth laboratory and polishing measurement and cleaning laboratory.

The center would be equipped with 24 sets of advanced equipments, mainly including a molecular beam epitaxy system, magnetic control colorsplatter coating film, electron beam evaporation system, multisource integration evaporation system, nano-structure production and in situ imaging electrical test synthetic system, focused ion beam, photomask exposure machine, dry etching machine, atomic layer deposition equipment, oxidation- high temperature diffusion- low pressure chemical vapor deposition equipment, silicon wafer cutterbar, surface reaction and analytic system.


III. Life Science Research Center

The center could provide equipment and technology support for scientific research in first-class disciplines, such as biology, physics and chemistry. The research fields mainly include:
1) molecular biology;
2) cytobiology;
3) genomics and bioinformatics;
4) systems biology;
5) proteomics;
6) drug molecular design and synthesis;
7) biomolecular structure and functions.

The center's construction started in September 2012 and obtained financial support for its equipment from the Shenzhen Development and Reform Committee in April 2014. According to the construction planning, the center would consist of four laboratories, a DNA sharing platform, a protein sharing platform, an animal experiment platform and a cell research platform.

The center would be equipped with 204 sets of advanced equipments, mainly including mass spectrometer, x-ray single crystal diffractometer, biomdecularinteraction analysis meter, albumen chromatograph, multipurpose efficient refrigerated centrifuge, independent rearing systems for rats and mice, fluorescence imaging system for small animals, ultrahigh resolution fluorescence microscope, laser scanning confocal microscope, transmission electron microscope, flow cytometer, fluorogenic quantitative PCR, fluorescence microscope (positive position), fluorescence inversion microscope system, gene chip system, high pressure freezing instrument, real-time cell imaging sysem, small transcriptome sequencing table, high resolution micro-ct system, fluorescent lifetime imaging system, cage shelf cleaning machine, pulse vacuum steam sterilizer, fluorescence reader, cell culture refrigerated centrifuge, carbon dioxide incubator and biosafety cabinet.


IV Foundations and Applied Research Centers on Pico-Scale

The center provides equipment and technical support for scientific research related to first-level disciplines such as physics, chemistry, optical engineering, materials science and engineering, and electronic science and engineering. The research center focuses on basic research on the picometric scale in the fields of energy materials, information materials, environmental materials, structural materials, and biomedical materials, and involves basic research on related applications.

The center is equipped with advanced equipment, including electron microscopes, ion beam thinning instruments, ion scanning microscopes, low-temperature strong magnetic field scanning tunneling microscopes, infrared atomic force microscopes and magnetic microscopes.
